Strathcona Renovation

PHASES 1 and 2

This family sought to enhance the function of their beautiful character home by revitalizing its kitchen and bathrooms. With more kids on the way, extra millwork was incorporated to maximize storage, and hand-fired clay tiles were selected to add organic punches of bright colour to each important room.

The kitchen was simplified with minimally adorned, beautiful millwork - cut-outs for drawers, and overlapping doors with reach-behind pulls for upper cabinets. A farmhouse apron sink and reclaimed fir floating shelves add warmth and character while continuing the clean lines, and the expansive new rear window fills the room with light and views of the historic neighbourhood. Heated slate floors provide the finishing touches. The pass-through to the adjacent dining area was opened up to ease congestion exposing beautiful old brickwork. A bank of built-in wooden benches was added along the main dining wall, offering seating and storage.

Kid-friendly details throughout the house -- including a small secret crawlspace connecting two kids’ bedrooms via their adjoining closets, and pull-out steps in the kick spaces under vanities in both bathrooms -- offer unique and thoughtful touches to this well-loved family home.

PHASE 3

The final phase of this rejuvenation was a revamp of the back of the house. A very poorly built and under-maintained multi-level deck was removed, making way for a light and spacious modern deck. Glass railings and an open stairway greatly improved the natural light at the lower levels and allowed an expansive vantage to watch the kids in the yard, and integrated lighting at both levels improved utility and safety while creating a gorgeous evening glow. Custom vertical stained fir screens add privacy and warmth, and modern steel accents finish the look. Landscaping was simplified with a grassy lawn and veggie beds for the whole family to enjoy.

What has emerged is a true family dream home.
